Local school districts including Walton County School District, Liberty County Schools and Washington County School District will join 10 other schools across Florida in a pilot program that will integrate local produce into school cafeterias.
This is due to a 6.5 million dollar grant the Florida School Nutrition Association (FSNA) just received from the USDA and FDACS.
The grant is aimed to further enhance the state’s farm-to-school initiative to:
- Integrate local produce into public schools’ meal programs
- Reduce barriers for local farmers to engage in schools’ procurement process
- Develop stronger relationships between the education and agriculture industry
- Diversify food sourcing channels
- Foster economic growth for small businesses and Florida farmers
