In 2018, Theo of South Walton, a lovable plush turtle, officially arrived in South Walton. Since then, the Theo brand has expanded from the first test market at the Pecan Jacks Candy and Ice Cream Shop in Gulf Place to over 25 locations along Highway 30A. All told, Theo product sales have raised over $100,000 to benefit the Friends of South Walton Sea Turtles (FOSWST), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. As many of our readers may know, Pecan Jacks’ owners, Tim and Veronica Wyatt, jumped into the Theo spirit by decorating their stores with Theo in mind! In addition, the couple created a unique “Theo of South Walton” flavored Ice cream, which, 6 years later, is still selling very well.

Beginning February 2024, Pecan Jacks will be the exclusive stockist for the latest Theo product – a children’s backpack! This eye-catching plushie is sure to be a big hit this summer but locals will get the first chance to purchase the backpack at Pecan Jacks beginning now – and at a special “locals only” price!

Theo the Turtle backpackFOSWST is dedicated to educating the public – visitors and locals alike, about sea turtle vulnerability and has initiated a #CleanDarkFlat campaign to remind people of the dangers of leaving trash and unfilled holes on the beach, or using bright lights that can frighten Sea Turtles coming to nest on South Walton’s Beaches. May 1st through October 31st is nesting season and FOSWST deploys up to 200 Volunteer Beach Ambassadors throughout the 26 miles of South Walton Beaches, teaching children about sea turtle vulnerability, marine ecosystems and conservation through efforts like the “plastic to paper” campaign begun in South Walton. “The amount of trash – especially plastic – that makes its way into the Gulf and is then ingested by our sea turtles is staggering,” says FOSWST President, Beth Coppedge. “We hope, through our educational efforts, “Theo” will continue to be a fun way to remind everyone about our mission. We consider Theo the “Conscience of South Walton,” she says. Theo is a great way to bless your child and help the FOSWST fulfill their educational mission!
