When the Army National Guard set out to find its best soldier, they found one of South Walton’s own. Brandon Brown, a Beach Safety Lieutenant for the South Walton Fire District, has been named the 2026 Army National Guard Soldier of the Year.
Brown earned the title during the 2026 Best Warrior Competition, held at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. The prestigious competition brought together high-performing Soldiers from across the United States to determine the National Guard’s top service members.
Through four demanding days, competitors completed more than 25 physically and mentally challenging events designed to evaluate every aspect of military readiness. The competition tested physical fitness, marksmanship, land navigation, tactical proficiency, leadership, and decision-making under pressure, all while soldiers were enduring Florida’s triple-digit heat index.
“This recognition speaks to Brandon’s character more than anything else,” said South Walton Fire District Fire Chief Ryan Crawford. “No matter which uniform he’s wearing, he leads by example and represents this District with professionalism and integrity. We’re incredibly proud of him and all he’s accomplished. This sort of service and performance is simply exceptional.”
Brown advanced to the national competition after winning company, state, and regional-level Best Warrior competitions, earning the opportunity to represent Florida on the national stage.
Within South Walton Fire District, Brown serves as a Beach Safety Lieutenant and Director of the Junior Lifeguard Program, where he leads efforts to educate local youth in open water safety, surf lifesaving skills, and leadership. He is also a certified drone pilot and serves as a mentor to the lifeguards under his supervision.
“Whether he’s mentoring and coaching others, protecting visitors on our beaches, or performing in his military role, Brandon approaches every responsibility with humility, discipline, and a genuine desire to serve,” Crawford added. “We strive to hire and retain this level of leadership within our Beach Safety Division, and this speaks volumes to what our lifeguards are capable of achieving.”
South Walton Fire District congratulates Lieutenant Brown on this remarkable achievement and extends its support to all the Soldiers who competed in the 2026 Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition.
