The Walton County Democratic Women’s Club is focused on issues that impact our fellow citizens. Each year, we dedicate 10 percent of our budget to charitable events and to organizations that need our assistance. In past years, the Club has funded books for both school and public libraries, provided food for our first responders as they faced the dangers of Covid, donated cash and volunteer hours to our local free clinic and aided numerous organizations that work with our local children who are facing difficult situations. This year they have chosen a very ambitious project to work on the problem of medical debt in our area.
Medical costs have doubled, insurance copays and deductibles have spiked, and bankruptcy rates have quadrupled, creating an avalanche of destructive medical debt. More than 60% of bankruptcies in America have medical debt as a root cause.
The Democratic Women are working with RIP Medical Debt, a highly regarded and rated 501c3 organization that buys purchasable medical debt for qualified individuals and abolishes the debt. RIP buys debt in huge quantities at very low cost.
Churches, synagogues, individuals, and clubs across our country are working with RIP to fund their efforts. Since 2014 they have abolished over 7 billion dollars in medical debt across the country.
Every dollar raised eliminates $100 in medical debt for people in deep need. It is the goal of the Democratic Women of Walton County to raise $5,000 to alleviate $500,000 in medical debt for eligible individuals in Northwest Florida.
