The Walton County Democratic Women contributed books suitable for children 0 to 3 years of age to the Jo Ann Birge Women and Children’s Center in DeFuniak Springs. The Center is a substance abuse facility for pregnant or postpartum women recovering from substance abuse. Each Mother is allowed to bring her newborn baby or toddler to the center so that baby and Mother can stay together during the critical early months.
Reading to a child is critical both to the bonding process and to the child’s brain development. Children’s books were needed at the Birge Center so the Democratic women collected the books at their annual Christmas party.
The club has a strong commitment to community service and the provision of these books continued its history of providing books to libraries, museums and other facilities. For further information about the Democratic Women please visit www.waltoncountydwc.org.
