As part of the “Art in Public Places,” artist Shelley Blackmarr will display her work at the Coastal Branch Library through the end of May. Shelley was born and raised in South Florida. Her early exposure to art was from her “Omi” (German grandmother) who was an artist. As a poor college student, she purchased a box of crayons and a fifty-cent coloring book as her escape. In the early 1970’s while in college she began in the art of beautiful writing, Calligraphy. She purchased a Speedball Calligraphy book, nibs, ink and practiced perfecting this art. Shelley has dabbled in glass mosaics, stained glass, watercolor and most recently oil painting. As a distraction from her job in IT supporting software, she turned to art once again. In 2015 Shelley took several lessons from local watercolor artist, Sharon Long and enjoyed painting with the late Carol Dickson for several years. Shortly before Shelley retired from her IT position, she had the opportunity to take oil painting lessons from Dorothy Starbuck. Shelley enjoys painting the flora and fauna of her South Florida childhood and, of course, the beautiful beaches of South Walton. She considers herself as an emerging artist and desires to continue to develop her skills.
