February is recognized as Black History Month, a time to celebrate the many accomplishments of African Americans and their central role in the history of America. It began as a week-long celebration of the birthdays of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two prominent Americans who helped to end slavery. In 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized the month of February as Black History Month.

This year in Walton County, Black History will be celebrated with banners that depict prominent local African Americans along Baldwin Avenue in DeFuniak Springs, and sponsored by Main Street DeFuniak. The local celebration will be capped by the 9th Annual Black History Parade starting at 11am on Saturday February 19th. Serving as the Grand Marshall this year, the Parade will be led by DeFuniak Springs City Manager Robert Thompson, and will feature local officials and groups, including an appearance by the celebrated Buffalo Soldiers (see photo) of North Florida.

The Parade extends down Baldwin Avenue, finishing at the Tivoli Complex, 145 S. Park Avenue, where you can enjoy a DJ and food trucks while visiting local vendors and learning about Community resources. During the event, the Black History Museum at the Tivoli Historical Society will be open for tours, free to the public.

The Parade is produced through the cooperation of the Walton County Chapters of the Democratic Black Caucus, The Democratic Women’s Club, the Democratic Environmental Caucus, and the Tivoli Historical Society.
