During the week of January 22-28, in conjunction with Severe Weather Awareness Week, Walton County implemented its new emergency notification system, AlertWalton. This system alerts residents of what actions they should take to protect themselves from emergencies and disasters.
Through AlertWalton, the county can contact thousands of residents within seconds so they can receive important information about a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods.
“We always have concerns about getting the word out to residents and visitors in the event of an emergency or disaster,” said Jeff Goldberg, Director of Walton County Emergency Management. “AlertWalton will send messages to registered residents and visitors via their preferred means of contact—such as cell phone, text message or email. This ensures real-time access to potentially lifesaving information.”
In addition to the “opt in” registration program, anyone that is listed in the Yellow or White Pages, as well as anyone that is in the 911 database, will be automatically subscribed to alerts by phone. AlertWalton registration allows residents and visitors to self-register and provide additional contact information. Residents are encouraged to register to begin receiving alerts. Signing up is quick, easy, and secure on the AlertWalton website at www.AlertWalton.org.
The system is also fully integrated with the county’s Emergency Management social media sites, www.facebook.com/WaltonCountyEM and www.twitter.com/WaltonCountyEM.
AlertWalton is powered by Everbridge and is a global enterprise software company that provides applications which automate the delivery of critical information to help keep people safe and businesses running, and is the service provider for the development and implementation of AlertFlorida under the Florida Division of Emergency Management. This service is provided at no charge to any Florida County that wants it. Funding was made possible from the Florida Legislature from the State Catastrophic Fund.
