Three teams from The Walton County School District advance to the Lego League regional finals.
For some, Legos are the small plastic landmines your foot meets on your evening check of the house. But for over 100 Walton County students, Legos are the building blocks upon which they create innovative designs, collaborate with fellow students, conquer seemingly impossible challenges, and ultimately find their spotlight.
On Saturday, December 4th, 2022, Freeport Middle School hosted the first Lego League Challenge. Students ages 8-14 showcased their science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) prowess using robots built from Legos and programmed to maneuver the challenges of the FIRST LEGO League playing board in the hopes of advancing to the regional finals.
The awards ceremony teemed with excitement and anticipation as Lauren Bierman, STEM Program Manager with the Doolittle Institute, sponsor of this first Lego League chapter, announced the results. Not one, not two, but three WCSD teams were awarded the opportunity to represent the District at the regional challenge in February – from Emerald Coast Middle School, the Raybotics and Stingrays – from Maude Saunders Elementary, the Robotic Warriors.
In addition to the hands-on STEM training students receive, students build lifelong friendships and, for many, find their homes among like-minded individuals. Chris Brown, Walton County School District Coordinator of Instructional Support Services, remarked that, for many, “this is their Friday Night Lights.” For the students of the Walton County School District, the future is indeed bright!
